Hands numb, feet frozen, I sit out of breath on my crash pad in the middle of the woods. Before me—like an unyielding warrior—stands the boulder whose features have ceaselessly rejected my entry to the top. Surrounded by fallen leaves, a setting sun, and a biting breeze, this massive rock and I stare deeply at one another. I drop my head and look down at my calloused, chalk-covered hands. Utterly exhausted, I laugh. I’m cold, I’m tired, but I’m happy. What a fierce duel I’ve brought upon myself. Surrendering has never felt so good.
